Another unimpressive BDO line-up.

Muse, Powderfinger, Lilly Allen, Eskimo Joe, Groove Armada, Grinspoon, The Mars Volta, Ladyhawke, Dizzee Rascal, Karnivool, Peaches, The Temper Trap, Kasabian, Midnight Juggernauts, Rise Against, Magic Dirt, Mastodon, Lisa Mitchell, The Horrors, Bluejuice, Calvin Harris, Kisschasy, The Decemberists, Tame Impala and Girl Talk.

Yet another fucking sub-par performance from Ken West. If he’d stop pulling his own dick, then maybe we’d have a decent line-up. Safe to say Falls leaves BDO for dead.

It's sad to bury the past, especially when it means handing over the reigns of your favourite music memories and knowing that the past is just that, fucking dead.

Big Day Out has spawned some of the most unforgettable moments in music, housing the biggest acts from across the globe. It's just these days, the line-ups are becoming more forgettable than a pair of underwear on Paris Hilton.

What the fuck Big Day Out? What the fuck?

I think they day it truly died was somewhere round 04, after Metallica sold two shows in Sydney alongside Muse and The Darkness. Since then it's been mediocre to say the least.

Sure we'll still all buy tickets in hope of a summertime resurrection but I feel that my years attending a drawing to an end.

Such buuullshit.

The Day Sydney Music Died.

Sydney's Hoptetoun Hotel Closed Today.

Local music factory and beloved Surry Hills venue The Hopetoun Hotel unexpectedly closed today.
Without warning, staff and punters were turned away due to unexpected closure, leaving our favourite bar staff jobless and the Sydney music scene reeling.

Bluejuice singer Jacob Stone took to his personal Facebook page today to express his surprise at the unexpected closure,

"Sadly, The Hopetoun Hotel closed today. This is big news for Sydney music, and me too, as I'm now unemployed. Since I got no notice about the closure, I wasn't prepared. If anyone hears of anything, please let me know."

It's safe to say that Jacob received several comments of shock and support as The Hopetoun has been home to some of Sydney's favourite nights out and historical gigs.

The Hopetoun also supported beloved independent music radio station FBI heavily when their future became hazy this year, donating one dollar for every gig and beer sold to the Aussie station.

Unfortunately it's evident that Sydney's independent music scene will suffer greatly from this loss, as the longtime muso landmark has been some of Aussie musics finest moments.

If you know anything about the unexpected closure, so email me at my link on the side of the page.

You can also join a Save The Hoey Facebook page here to put your ideas forward for a way to save our favourite venue.

'United States of Eurasia' - New Muse Single

Um.
Take a few years off, take an acid trip, see Freddie Mercury in a vision, wake up and decide to redo a sound so sacred no one will know what to think of you.
That's all I can think of..
I'm a firm believer in 'it's not where you take it from, but where you take it to', but this is just a blatant mimicry of a sound already famous by Queen decades ago.
'United States of Eurasia' sounds like a B-side from and old Queen record, or some kind of hybrid of 'We Are The Champions' and 'Bohemian Rhapsody'.
Matthew Bellamy is no stranger to imitation, with many Radiohead fans slating the fellow UK rocker having shamelessly imitated vocals prominent to Radiohead front man Thom Yorke's famous falsetto on some of Muse's early records.

Muse are certainly a brilliant band in their own right, and honestly one of my favourites. I just wish they stuck with their original sound, think 'Origin of Symmetry' and 'Hullabaloo', or even the acclaimed 'Absolution' record. This new stuff really isn't doing it for me, and even though 'Black Holes and Revelations' wasn't awful, it did slightly put me off of my Muse phase. I like new direction, as I've mentioned in the past, I'm a Radiohead fan but I mean, if you're going to change your sound, do it to your own tune, in your own right. Don't rip off mega sounds just because you played a few Wembley Stadium gigs.

If I'd never heard a Queen record in my life, maybe I'd like this. But it's just big show bullshit and just another power rock ballad for Bellamy to belt out at one his huge overpriced stadium gigs. I remember in 2004 when a select few people knew who Muse were and my Dad used to make me Muse mix CD's, it was all so modest talent then and not sell out Guitar Hero bullshit.

Listen to it below..
I'm cranky.

New Arctic Monkeys song - Crying Lightening

It's no secret that English crowd pleasers the Arctic Monkeys have been destined for musical success since the four handsome young lads crash our air waves in 2006. The lyrically mature teens from Sheffield, England set the "indie", rock and pop world on fire with the release of 'Whatever People Say I am, That's What I'm Not'. The Brits new sound sent waves of fanfare across the globe with their hit single 'I Bet You Look Good On The Dance Floor' infecting all genres and Myspace profiles alike.

After several sold out shows, including a few explosive Australian shows, the lads headed back to the studio for their follow-up record 'Favourite Worst Nightmare'. The lyrically witty Alex Turner once again did not cease to amaze the music communities with the lead single 'Brianstorm' paying homage to revival of 'mod music' and that 60's English sound.
The four piece that is Arctic Monkeys relished another successful release in 07 and were quick to tour, delivering a smashing Splendour performance and several sideshows here on our Aussie shores.

Not ones for sitting back and enjoying success, Turner forayed into his own solo ventures which brought you 'The Last Shadow Puppets' which was another NME favourite and triumph for the blossoming superstar.

Without rest, word was rife that the lads had returned to the studios for their third Arctic Monkeys record which promised to me more profound, and enlisted the help of musical mastermind Josh Homme from QOTSA. Twelve tracks were recorded at Homme's Rancho De La Luna in Joshua Tree in California which has been the home of several other infamous recordings and another twelve in New York with English producer James Ford, however only ten made the cut for the oddly named new record, 'Humbug',

Big Day Out 2009 saw the return of the Monkeys to our shores, to which the lads let slip some new material on the New Zealand leg of the tour and some well executed Nick Cave covers.
The first single to be released off of the English outfits third offering is titled 'Crying Lightening' and it's definitely a different vibe to the boys previous work.

The Arctic Monkeys banging bass lines are still ever present with that essence of latter day funk, but as the track opens you can tell something has changed. Turner's vocals are lower, more mysterious and all of a sudden it's no secret he's spent some certain time listening to Mr Caves back catalog.

'Crying Lightening' oozes the eery appeal that Cave is notorious for delivering, and with sweet yet dark lyrical undertones brought to life with a very Hendrix'esque riff and inviting bass lines.
This track is smooth like chocolate, only for your ears, and demands to be replayed, over and over and I can only imagine 'Humbug' is filled with many of the same. I can't help but love it and it's encouraging me to attend their next show a little more sober than last time.

Check out the song and awesome clip below;

New Thom Yorke - The Present Tense

This is so fucking amazing.
I don't even have the words.
Completely different to Yorke's previously solo efforts featured on 2006's 'The Eraser', yet satisfyingly perfect.

Yorke showcased this little gem at the recent Latitude Festival.
What I wouldn't of given to be there.

WHITE LIES - E.S.T

My favourite song today.
Old sounds new, mix Soft Cell, The Killers, New Order and you get White Lies.
Huge call, but it works for me.
Easy. Indie/pop at its best.

Let's talk Splendour two thousand and nine.

Firstly, can I say what potential this line-up could of had? Some of the biggest names in music have dropped new releases this year, for instance; Sonic Youth, Placebo, PJ Harvey and Silversun Pickups to say briefly. What's up with Splendour? Your headline acts have been seamless for years and out of Murphy's law of some other twist shit vs fan I get MGMT? Bah, curses.

I'm bitter because my heart was set on Sonic Youth, and a few music insiders had dropped Radiohead into the mix alongside Oasis and other mega-bands. So when I got Splendour veterans Bloc Party, which if you ask me, peaked in 2005 and the new Britney Spears mixed with ecstasy MGMT, well I had a sour taste in my mouth.

I'm not completely hating, I mean you.. sure, depending on timetable clashes, you will probably see me at both of these acts but seriously? I'd be disappointed if I had been a Splendour go'er for for the last few years and having to be subject to the same headlining bands three out of the last five years. But weren't Bloc Party here in November and MGMT in December? I don't know.. I just don't get it..

Let's talk about the good things for instance, The Flaming Lips.
Need I say more? Okay, fake blood, explosions, fire and giant balls? Does it sound good? Or just a normal Flaming lips gig.. the latter. You're going to lose your fucking mind. I've been watching clips all day.. and you won't even need drugs, though it will be nice.. just don't freak-out and fuck it up for your mates. You'll never see anything like it... but here's a taste.

And that's a tiny treat.

Who else am I down for? There's definitely a lot, considering the sour start to thing blog..
Happy Mondays. Straight for Joy Divisions Manchester punk movement days, incarnated several times and still kicking, not straight-jackted or dead. Bring your psychedelics please.

I'm excited for Friendly Fires, The Specials, and I will definitely see Bluejuice as they're always a lot of fun.. Probs Little Red and no doubt Dappled Cities, definitely Yves Klein Blue (They're amazing), always see my friends Children Collide and the drum role please... Manchester Orchestra. It'll blow your fucking mind. 'Mean Everything To Nothing' is a fucking brilliant record as to their previous work.

Even though Sonic Youth can't be there, to name a few misses there is certainly enough hits to keep me going. What do you think of the complete line-up? Will I see you there? No pants, just drugs and a hotdog in hand? Hope so!

The Temper Trap - Conditions - for Marc.

I once paid $15 for one of Temper Traps shows back in like, December..
I stayed there for the opening act and was so drunk I forgot where I was and left for another show. What a mistake.

The Temper Trap have been on of those bands over the last six months that have been creeping all over my muso-dar and I've been too lazy to follow up. They've been at pubs and clubs all within vicinity, at festivals I've been at and just in my big stupid face.

Last week I was talking to a friend of mine from Melbourne and when I asked who he was listening to right then, he mentioned these kids. I ignored it and went on my merry way listening to old Bright Eyes and everything else I'm still not over. Then another Melbourne kid sent me an email deeming their new record 'Conditions' as "crap" going on to say,

" I was a huge fan, but the record is disappointing. The indie sound was what it was because it was raw and not gleaming from polish. The record is just another pop piece of crap, they've released a flavour of the month. Shame."

This prompted more curiosity so I wandered into Hum on Oxford last Saturday to pick up 'The Eternal' by Sonic Youth and well, that's a whole other story.. But I searched for 'Conditions' and due to ignorance, simply couldn't see it so I almost give up and then there is is for $24.95. I'm used to JB prices and I normally only pay 20 and down for records I'm not that partial to. So I put it down and go to the DVD stand and aimlessly browse through Hums collection of odd tittles. I'm really enjoying the store vibe and keep half listening to the soundtrack over the speakers. I keep saying to myself, "I like this, I like this, must ask who it us." like an idiot. After about 20 minutes I figure it out and awkwardly go and pick up 'Conditions' for the second time and purchase it for the full $24.95, however get a free t-shirt to boot thanks to the gents at Hum.

Anyway, so I put the record on already knowing I'm going to enjoy it and I do. Start to finish. It is polished, smooth and I like it because it makes good background music to me. It sounds like a back-handed compliment and it really isn't. I personally think the song are good, especially 'Resurrection', and the obvious 'Fader' but I see a lot of potential in 'Science Of Fear' which always gets my attention with it's lyrics when I'm not really paying attention.

The records transitions are smooth, and it's even spread and not top-heavy which is my biggest peeve in records today. 'Conditions' comes to a close with the lads instrumental piece appropriately titled 'Drum Song' which I like quite a fucking bit. It was actually the first song I did my manifested "ohh" and checked the song title, which I do in reference for weeding out playlist additions. I was actually disappointed it was the end of the record.

I need to see The Temper Trap do their thing, and would basically wet myself if they opened with 'Drum Song' as opposed to obviously closing with it. I'm so bored of bands going out with drum solos from over-zealous lead singers. I liked it when Parades did it June 08. I'm tired now.

yeah, holy fucking shit.

The opening track to Sonic Youths brand new record 'The Eternal'..

Song in my head.

Harlequin Leagues Triple J thrashed single Again and Again (all irony intended).

It's like what Brian Molkos comic book theme music would sound like... you know, if he had one.

NEW CLIP - Snob Scrilla - Heartbreal Scorsese

I've never been a huge fan of Sydney's Mr Snob Scrilla however this song seems to really do it for me. That's not to say I haven't liked he's previous work, but it's never really been my vibe however this cut from Scrilla's recent record 'Day One' caused quite the ruckus in my bedroom this evening.

I've got plenty of friends who are into his beats and I'm starting to see why. There's this notion of profundity dressed in slang and upbeat synth that you relate unintentionally but want to jump around to simultaneously. It's an obscure mix, that seems to work effortlessly and it only took me one run of 'Heartbreak Scorsese' to figure out I'll be playing it for months. I love the repetition of Snobs ignorant yet endearing "I'll never change, I'll never change." It gives me an essence of fuck you! .. and we all like a little of that now, don't we?

I rate this clip and it features Chaingangs bangin' hot percussionist Skarlet Saramore smashing TV's and getting a little lady revenge. Hell hath no fury like a sleeved woman scorned Snob, Haven't you heard?

The Inheritors June 6th @ Spectrum on Oxford

Now this is a gig I encourage you all to see!
I've mention these barefooted Central Coast lads before and I'm still not over them.
About two weeks ago or so, I caught their EP launch at The Hopetoun in Surry Hills and what a show!

Even though the front man Tobias (Tij) was feeling a little under weather, the three men still lifted the roof with their infectious rock/pop melodies and almost packed out the house.

The three piece has also just made their Triple J debut with the potent track 'Fever' now dominating your airwaves, so keep your ears to the ground for the next big thing!

The Inheritors will be playing with locals Only the Sea slugs, No art and Ghoul for help raise money for FBi as part of a series of shows in a pledge to obtain one million dollars to keep our beloved station afloat!

What can you do? Well you can grab a denim vest, a possible red onsie and roll to spectrum for a killer show for a good cause!

The Inheritors are on at 8:30 and it's Tij's birthday so lets cause a fucking ruckus for FBi!

Yves Klein Blue - May 28th @ Supper Club

So I remember once I wrote their bio for MTV and I remember they actually got their start through said worldwide music channel during one of their 'Unearthed-esque' competitions called Kickstart.
From memory they won about two years ago but I'd never heard a whole lot of them until their catchy little number 'Polka' appeared on some car add on free to air.
I remember my boyfriend liking it and pointing it out at the time, though I never remember what the add was about I always jumped around a little in my chair.

So last night the foursome took to the stage at the Oxford Hotels Supper Club, an elegant (maybe even too nice for me) venue where waitstaff actually bring out tapas and so forth. I felt out of place but basically it was a Thursday night hull for the who's who of the industry with some big shots from Channel V and other local idependent artist and scenesters filling the room.

The invite said there was due to be no support and that the gig would kick off at 8pm. Never one to be late, fellow blogger Reel-around-the-fountain and I conversed of some very tall glass beers and waited for the band to take the small level stage.

At around about 8:30pm the four YKB boys made their way through the crowd and affectionately kissed fans and friends on the cheek and shook hands along the way. I always love it when bands keep it personal.

I've never really been a fan though all songs were new, aside from 'Polka', I honestly wouldn't of known. Front man Michael Tomlinson fashionably dones the old school flapper haircut, straight edge and stern browed he's absolutely fierce. The kick off and already I'm doing my boarder line retarded knee dance that I do when I like what I'm hearing.

The songs are solid and I'm enthralled. I can see friends around the room but it's hard to make eye contact because everyone can't stop staring at Tomlinson and he can't stop staring at you.. He actually doesn't really blink and bares the infamous Ian Curtis nature, that almost epileptic look in the eyes and you can hear him giving every song his absolute all, songs often ending in gasps of exasperation.

It's been sometime since I've seen a performer so immersed in the upbeat yet deeper than the service lyrics. You almost feel exhausted watching them yet you can't look away.

Every song is perfect, sometimes bearing obvious influences such as Modest Mouse and even commented Vampire Weekend-esque new tracks.

The highlight of the show would have to be a solo performance Tomlinson provided acoustically about some past romantic endeavor. The lyrics are so genuine and I mean the role of an artist is to make you believe what he's singing, what he felt when he wrote it and I fucking do when this guy sings. I actually found my mouth on the ground when he utters the words "I care about the future, I do".

'Ragged and Ecstatic' is due out this June and their new single 'Getting Wise' just release on the 22nd of May.
I will buy this record. No doubt.

It was so refreshing to catch a band who aren't so full of themselves and offer to hang round for beers after the show and actually insist we don't wander off aimlessly to the kebab store.

You must see them live to see what they're about, though catchy on track it's just something you need to appreciate. Artists who are clever and give a fuck.

I don't know if you kids knew..

But Phoenix were a band before two thousand and nine.
A fellow blogger and I were discussing over a beer at the Yves Klein Blue listening party last night that it's been some time since a band has experienced such a solid comeback..
It's like they're fucking brand new..
I mean Phoenix are being welcomed in the way Axle had of hoped, but alas epically failed...
It's kind of like when Tegan and Sara released 'The Con'.. the girls, they flocked and were like..twisting hair calling it a debut..

Cool, but weird.. just sayin'..

Code Red - Chaingang - Watch This Space.

Fierce! That's one word describe Sydney's groundbreaking new pop/rock and all round punk four-piece Chaingang.

The exciting boy/girl foursome really do put on a show of shows - collecting the who's who of Sydney's independent scene including Jake Grigg from Something With Numbers and Paul Mac also spotted in the depths of Chaingangs explosive Friday night show.

Sticking to fashion as their status quo and heavy riffs that make New York's Yeah Yeah Yeahs wish they were their first record. Chaingang have set the independent scene on fire with live performances wowing industry favourites and bringing back female-fronted punk.

Catching these guys is an energetic event. Front woman and soon to be fashion icon Hayley Foster ignites the stage with an eccentricity unseen and unchallenged since The Grates breakthrough circa 2006. Foster controls the stage, exuding attitude, mic chord in her mouth - is she she your best friend or do you think you wanna fuck her? Patience better watch her back.
It doesn't stop there, Fosters strong vocals mixed with the solid percussion's of the scantly clad and tattooed sleeved drummer Scarlet Saramore keep the tongues wagging while Dan Duque-Perez (guitar) and Mike Jeffery (bass) wipe the floor with killer riffs. Sydney needed a change of pace, something explosive and Chaingang are it!

Check it.

Just and inch of what's keeping me sane.. Silversun Pickups!

A lot of people are partial to implying Silversun Pickups are a mere imitation of the melancholy expertise that is, well was Smashing Pumpkins. Sure I can see the similarity, the soft feminine vocals that are not harsh nor severe, washed with riffs of angst driven temperament.
All similarity aside, I've always liked Silversuns because of their sound, and yeah I am a SP fan but I'm not offended by the influence in their music.

'Swoon' is an angrier side of the Californian rockers, and you can tell with the opening track 'There's No Secrets This Year'. The record breaks open with a riff you'd expect off of a Pumpkins b-side. But the lyrical depth is different, I could go on comparing but I'm sick of it. Let's look at it as though it's its own release, relax.. you'll enjoy it more.

It's a bit dirtier than 'Canarvas' and I like that. The first single off of the record is 'Panic Switch' which is no 'Lazy Eye' as it were but definitely holds some weight. My only criticism is that this record is not particularly memorable as it is just good. I suppose my opinion is a bit wishy-washy but I think as far as music goeth, Siversun Pickups aren't doing anything different, they're just good. Good is great in this day and age, what with all the shit spewing out onto the airwaves these days.

I get angry about new music, I mean it's a bit rude to say but it just isn't what it used to be anymore. Where's the "fuck you"?.. I want a big fucking revolution. I am not going to commence a soap box induced rant about how music was better before I was born.. I'm just sayin'..

Either way, this record is worthy of a hard copy purchase. It's not wanky, pretentious or bullshit. It's a good record start to finish. Put it on and read a book. I give 'Swoon' three and a half OWM stars and below is one of my favourite of the the follow-up. Enjoy.

I've left you high and dry.

I'm sorry kids.
I am the worst blogger in all the land.
Probably the most self obsessed in all the land.. Been tearing up the personal one for all it's been worth but alas, I have exciting news!

I've just been taken on board The Brag as a new contributor so keep an eye out for my shiz the awesome weekly music mag.

I've got a lot of gigs to write up, such as The Lazys and Parades - Who has been hearing them all over Triple J? I know I have been! So many exciting things going on.

Oh, and the new SIlversuns? Amazing right? AH.. all coming soon!!!

Tonight - Franz Ferdinand

Just another perfectly packaged indie pop collection from the popular Scottish four-piece.

This backhanded compliment might come as a shock, (yes, I mean it with mild malice) but could this band be an safer?

'Tonight' has enough high rotated hits to keep Apple commercials fresh for at least the next three months and of course enough 'edgy' one liners for all those kids on Facebook to self indulge.

Why am I so negative towards this release? Well I just think it's a possibility that never putting a foot wrong can be nothing other than boring. It's too the same, too polished, too clean.

If it ain't broke why fix it right? Wrong. I'm a firm believer in taking risks, I'm a Radiohead fan after all. I like my records to show maturity, change in direction and musical exploration.

In saying that, of course the songs aren't completely shit. They're catchy and easy, I suppose I just wanted more from their third record.

If it's the same turd every time, will the kids still buy it? Yes, yes they will. Somewhere in Scottland these four men must be laughing in all their money.

I agree with The Brag review in saying that 'Tonight' is all hairtcut and no soul.

The Best Thing I've Seen This Week

I am no good for you but Sia might be,

Another instance of not being able to embed a clip - complete bullshit.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uvd814WG2t4

We here at OWM love a side of crazy, and the new single 'Buttons' by Sia is making for high rotation. Maybe because I can relate, but still it's quirky and catchy.

I really love that Sia, being so capable of penning the most beautiful songs can come out with something that is basically a ridiculous song. Not to mention the clip, it's white padded cell shit.

I think I can relate to upbeat mania.
I love it.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Zero

Am I the only one that doesn't like it that much?

Maybe it will grow on me?

I just don't love it yet.

I can't manage to get a video embeded, as they all won't allow it which is unfortunate.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DxZGYGojPeE Here is the link if you're yet to hear it.

It's catchy but.. just lacks? I don't know. I hate that I don't love it.

What do you think?

Yellow Brick Road + Other Things

Hey kids,

I've been a little slack on ye olde blog these days, it's probably because I've been spending all my free time at shows and other times well I'm asleep. :)

First thing to note would be the impressive Sydney line up at Yellow Brick Road @ Oxford Arts the past month or so. Basically any favourite Sydney indie band we love to donate out ten to fifteen dollars to once a month have headlined this terrific free night.

Just to name a few I've been able to catch new Arts residency band The Spirits, my favourite smalls fry/big sound Papa VS Pretty, the soulful Cameras and the majestic Parades. With a change of sound guy the shows are becoming more and more successful with Parades pulling one of the bigger crowds I've seen thus far and also sounding the best.

Parades normally have a bit of trouble with their sound guys, but Mark Smithers seemed to capture everything just right, setting The Gallery alight. The Sydney folks I virtually dedicate this page to have experienced an amazing response from Australian radio giant Triple J with their new track 'Dead Nationale'. I also hear it is only 4 days now before they release a new track which is supposed to be well, earth moving.

Another mention to Cameras who are playing their first big festival, you can catch these cats at Sydney's Come Together Festival. It truly makes me happy when the ball starts rolling and people start to pick up on the sounds.

An unusual place for me to hang in is Kings Cross Club 77, though last week I found myself there two nights in a row to catch my favourite grunge act The Waysiders and Central Coast indie/pop-rock outfit The Inheritors.

So turning up to the venue I'm getting flash backs of some very dank and almost embarrassing nights spent in the generally grimy club from last Winter (I may have had a StarFuckers phase, don't judge me). What I do like? You can smoke inside so it's like a real gig and essence of marijuana is lingering and the air con's on so it's cool and well the amps are fucking loud. Cold, smelly and loud.

What I don't like? Well.. The fruit flies in the toilet.. Not nice. Also the girls in Target clothes making fools of themselves. The three dollar vodka special when the Vodka tastes like fucking Tequila or toilet water.

So anyway back to the bands.. The Waysiders.. I'd marry them, but it wouldn't work out. We'd all fight about washing up or something trivial like that. Haha okay, maybe not.

So they played a new track or two but their music, it's almost too good for the undiscovered Australian scene. I think if any of the indie kids should pick up a residency it should these three boys. They just sound so good in the background, they look so good and it's new age grunge, smooth and edgy. I know I dance round my room to 'The Inferno', it just reminds me of Thurston Moore in NY 1990's with a hint of psychedelica and when you're watching it live in the deep dark room in 77, nothing is more rock 'n roll than right there and then with your best friend stoned and a fake severed head on the DJ booth glaring at you.

I'd like to see them play more shows and write more songs, I really think it's something (their vibe) is something no one else is really trying anymore and I don't know why.

Dance in your underwear and click here.

After my taste of grungy post punk fun the Thursday night before, I drag myself down to catch a friends band from the Central Coast, otherwise my home town.

I will always support music coming out of my hood, because not a lot does sparing Something With Numbers and up and coming The Lazys.

Why do I like The Inheritors? Because it's been a fucking long time since I've liked a pop-rock band and I'm not saying it because they're from the Coast, I actually feel happy when I watch them. Maybe it's all the rainbows and bare feet on stage, or the headbands or even the vests?

It's just happy and I can see it getting some solid radio play and it doesn't make me shudder for once because I think it's something anyone can enjoy.

The lads had a EP launch at local venue Woodport Inn which has housed many indie acts like British India and Evermore and such. Apparently the crowd were through the roof, the place completely covered head to toe in giant colourful rainbows, the literal and musical kind. Otherwise a complete success.

I think keep an eye on the guys, who just recently finished touring with Kisschasey and if I can recommend a song I'd say my favourite is 'Fever'.

Other than that there is lots more to come V Fest Inclusive, though not much went down.. Just a lot of food and also some MTV Awards adventures. I know I'm a few weeks late but better late than never :)

The Kills @ V Festival Sydney

I couldn't find a better word to try to describe this act, than just.. fuck.
Fuck, one for Alison and another for Jamie.

The impeccably dressed Brits took to the tiny V Fest stage and just fucking tore it apart.
I've been to a lot of festivals, seen a lot of international guests do the same boring thing, however The Kills just brought sex. It's been sometime since I've seen sex on stage, sans Sex On Fire, if you were making that joke, just, well .. go die? Please? Baby? Okay.

Alison, dressed in skinny jeans, a tattered Ksubi tee and leopard print jacket seems anxious as she paces round the small stage, cigarette continuously lit. She sings perfectly on cue and presses her tiny yet intimidating frame up against the speaker to inhale deeply and perfectly in time between vocals.

The U.K duo opened with their leading single from 'Midnight Boom' (their most successful in Australia to date) 'U R A Fever' and the crowd are in awe. The trendy two take turns in lyrics, perfectly on time, perfectly in tempo and all I could hear is people describing the rapes they planned to 'do over' on the two when the song wrapped.

You can't take your eyes off of Alison as she paces but you can just hear Jamie's guitaring consistency whist the drum machine goes and it's like some work of art.

The Kills performed most of the tracks from 'Midnight Boom' and hits like 'Kissy Kissy', they don't bullshit you between songs and the sound is better further back I soon discover.

Highlight of the set, 'Black Balloon' as day day turned into dusk this was the perfect track for me to forget another day in the fucking sun. I hate the fucking sun.

Closing with 'Cheap and Cheerful' you can hear all the girls screaming the words they know and i still want to have sexy with Alison. Maybe Jamie.. Maybe both?

Low light? I don't have sideshow tickets. Fudge.

Time has gotten by on alibis and wine

So hello boys, and girls,

It's your crazy, lazy blogger here, and I come bearing new ideas and a new approach.

I've been the busiest bee you can imagine, having just recently moved to the city you can imagine the kind of social realms I've been exposed to and obviously I've been enjoying them thoroughly. This has left my general health and blogging time in shambles - How rock 'n roll you say? eh.
"Just lying in a bar with my drip feed on
Talking to my girlfriend just waiting for something to happen"..
Literally, these days.

So my apologies kitty cats, but always one for a side of redemption and revenge, I'll be back very shortly with a refreshed sense of direction. I've always been a firm supporter of the Sydney underground but I must start listening to to new beats, even if I hate it, I suppose I can rant to you about that yeah? Though I will still continue to support the indie kids no doubt, just try and expand my musical horizons..

Not only that, I will be blogging from backstage at the MTV Awards, so I'll be rubbing VIP passes with the big kids (ie. The Killers and Kaiser Chiefs) so no doubt I will have a story or two for y'all.

This might just be a big year for us yeah?

The only time I will listen to GaGa or Mayer.

CAMERAS AT V? Yes Please.

Despite the notable handicap of having yet to play in a garage as such, the good judges of the Garage 2 V competition (whereby a lucky entrant will be selected to play at the V festival along side the Killers, Kaiser Chiefs et al) have overlooked this and selected CAMERAS as one of 4 bands to compete in an old fashioned 'vote off' for a spot in the final.

Now Cameras are the likes of Sydney's precious underground sound destined for musical goodness and I for one would 'shit a brick' at the thought of these guys at V.

Do a little for the little guys with the big sounds, have a listen to their vibes here - the thee piece have just launched new tracks 'Horizontal' and 'Vampires In Transit'.

It's like Chan Marshall and Johnny Greenwood got kind of high and locked them selves in a cabin with Thom Yorke acting as cabin curator for a weekend.

So what does one need to do to give soul a chance?

Please follow the link below to vote for CAMERAS to compete in the Garage 2 V final. Just say in 25 words or less why CAMERAS should win a slot in the national final and YOU COULD WIN 2 VIP TIX to V FEST, a Nokia 5800 mobile AND if you forward the band your confirmation email for voting to cameras.band@gmail.com, they lovely Cameras crew will send you one of their brand new tracks 'Horizontal' which they have just recorded! Click below to vote for Cameras:

P.S. A gig at Oxford Arts new Wednesday night of debauchery Yellow Brick Road has surfaced for March 18th.. If you're smart kids I'll see you there.. Cheap beers and Cameras yeah?..

P.P.S. You don't have to do the 25 words or less bit, only if you want to wins some bigs :)

Papa VS Pretty - Brand New Track

So you may remember back in the dizay' when this blog was born, one of the first entries was about the talented Sydney three-piece that is Papa VS Pretty.

The three young boys have become regulars on the local music scene, performing the summer festival trail and delivering wild live performances without fail to their growing supporters.

These cats as noted below are playing World Bar this Friday with fellow local artists Parades and as a treat have delivered me some brand new goods for your keen ears.

Here's a taste of the awesome to come, I hope you're in a very young Nick Cave kind of mood.

PAPA VS PRETTY - ARRESTEM

P.S Check the bands Myspace here for tour dates and to have a listen to the rest of Papa VS Pretty killer tracks.

BIG DAY OUT SYDNEY ~ 23/01/09

What a year to blend into other years.

It was my 5th year Big Day Out Anniversary and it was, yeah okay. Nothing amazing, nothing short of shit but to be honest, it's either me getting old or times are changin'.

When I draw back on the memory, the whole ordeal brings to light scorching heat and too many fucking people. I can only estimate it was almost 40 degrees in the middle of the day and with no where to hide from the sun, I really started to question if Olympic Park really is the best venue for such a festival. Yeah it's big, but the sound is kind of shitty (especially the main stages) and when it rains or simply burns the skin on our bones, there is really nowhere to hide. This is my first complaint.

So the day started off in some ridiculously long, smoker friendly line with a 30 minute waiting time to even walk in the door (without even showing my ticket) in 30 degree + heat. So it came as no surprise whilst watching the end of the fantastic Children Collide, it was lights out scout. I was watching the Melbournites perform the last of their set, when suddenly it was all white bright lights and ears popping. Luckily I made it to St Johns in time for an excess of water and recovery, just in time.

So I walked aimlessly around in hope of recovery, seeking shade and H20, then it came time to catch The Ting Tings, and nothing much has changed, they still sucked and for some hope of improving their sound the peeps at BDO put them on the small stage? Idiots. I've never seen so much human traffic in that grassy space and it was literally human traffic a la Sneaky Sound System in the Lillypad 2007. Drag. Did I mention there is possible pun in calling them The Tin Tins because it would suit better.

Next up was Black Kids and they were amazing, I didn't see much as I was holding prime position for TVOTR, however the U.S kids sounded just like their record and normally I hate that but after a disappointing day it was nice to hear something of quality.

And now for what I had been waiting for... TVOTR!
It was good, great, amazing but I expected more? Their sound I think is better suited for indoors with many songs almost hard to make out for the first minute. The exotic, eccentric dance moves held my gazed and the crowd were really chilled, besides one girl off her tits flashing her undies to everyone. All in all I guess I was happy to hear 'Staring At The Sun' as well as a distorted 'Red Dress' but wish I caught the sideshow.

I start to lose track of the day a little, a mix of vodka slushies, cooling summer eve on the grass and My Morning Jacket (who were fucking impressive!). Here comes the best part of the day where you start to find everyone because they're too fucked up to move fast now and all your text messages start to transit. I caught The Drones, got in a grass fight and made my way to the Arctic Monkeys.

I'd missed these guys several times now, but was never particularly fussed, and to be honest the main stage did the U.K teens no justice. It's very hard for anyone to sound good in that stadium (cast your mind back to White Stripes walking off stage in 06') and it was just kind of luke warm to me. Could of been the vodka or the torn choice to be there instead of Hot Chip (even if I did see them the Wednesday before).

The best thing was their cover of 'Red Right Hand' originally by Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds. It was pretty hot, but definitely lacked the edge and sophisticated murderous essence that Cave provides, though still a highlight.

So one drink blends into the next and my memory starts to decay, from my memory I ended up catching the end of Hot Chip performing 'Ready For The Floor' and in the chaos of the barricades and masses flocking to see The Prodigy, my equally sweaty friend and I decided to wander, accidentally stumbling upon a very empty arena with a lone Neil Young. I was too messed up to take it all in and somehow ended up back in the Boiler Room and amongst the wet mess witnessing The Prodigy who were quite literally off the wall.

The rest of the night has faded and I somehow woke up sans phone and only a sun burnt forehead. Kind of alright really but now particular moments I'll remember for life aka Arcade Fire 08', The Hives 05', Mars Volta 06, and well nothing really in 07' thanks to the special K bomb.

Will I go next year? I honestly don't think so... Don't quote me on it though..

What I've Been Listening To In The Background

The Protectors ~ The title sounds like an influential 80's band late for it's time.

So an OWM reader sent me an email suggesting 'The Protectors' to me and well for the first time, I actively traveled straight to their Myspace page (and lets just take a moment to praise Myspace music, making the digital world just that much more excessble and well just better - amen)..

I was caught of guard by this electric dose of camp, not too camp, just right. The first track is Dangerous Boys and it starts off distorted but carried with a nice soft guitar intro and then evolves to a riff I'd expect influenced from the first Killers Record. It's really upbeat and at first my funeral music taste was all intimidated and hated it. Trying to open up my musical pallet I listened again, I liked.. it is great weekend music, before you go out, cleaning your room and well I'd definitely catch a gig, it sounds like a band who would deliver an upbeat performance.

I like how none of the tracks sound alike, 'I'm a Sister' reminds me of 'The Young Knives' and 'Speak Slowly' is a decendent of LCD and Hot Chip.

I can name all of these influences even if they have not had a hand in production, if they all sounded like the same artist I'd have a problem, but there is nothing from with takes of influence from an array of respectable acts.

Summer soundtrack? Check it >> http://www.myspace.com/theprotectors

We Are Scientists - Thanks to an amazing Glastonbury DVD

For my 21st birthday I received some amazing gifts, some I'd use, some I'd only hop to ie. A Gordon Ramsay Book (I've read it and tried, but you see I've ignited my kitchen twice now - truth is I'm just scared) but one of the best was from a mates Dad who burnt me 08's Glastonbury DVD's.

It hurts to watch because it seems an injustice that I wasn't actually present but through the power of T.V I can watch it from my bed. I picked up a variety of acts mainly We Are Scientists, their performance of 'After Hours' got my attention from beneath my pile of uni readings. Bad W.A.S for encouraging no study.. anyway it's a fun song on high rotation which you confuse for a story about unity and love or something like that but it's basically about a venue haha. It's nice, and starts almost exactly like (Antichrist Televisions Blues) by Arcade Fire, I can overlook it because it makes me happy.

I also picked up on The Editors, the U.K version of Interpol, I like it but not sure if I can stand the similarity.

Ohhh I FINIAL LY got 'Dear Science'! Only now you say? Yeah, only now.. But you see music this fine needs time, appreciation and company.. I need to be with it night and day and I just have not had the time until now.. it's great, wait no, that's dressing it down.. it's immaculate, a portrait of everything (and it's little) great that's going on in music right now, it's like coke in the nose of the nobles.. Raw, deep and bubbly indie sounds.
The best thing about TVOTR is their impeccable talent with loops and Tunde Adebimpe's perfectly echoed vocals. Perfection.

Oh and in other OWM news, we are going to be one of the lucky blogs who will be receiving an exclusive look into one of Sydney's best indie acts new tunes :D This will be an amazing thing for me and you kids because of course if I'm listening, so will you.. More on this soon!

ALSO THOSE OF YOU ATTENDING BIG DAY OUT - do not be lame and show up for the main acts, get outside the bubble and see some kids you might not know! I know Sydney has Children Collide, Sparkadia, Eddy Current Suppression Ring and a few others on early, totally check them out.. DO IT.
Take care crumble-butts.

TUBES 4 GOOGS - Where you need to be Jan 10th!

So as you should all be aware, I am in fact a Central Coastian that somehow got under the fence and made it to the city of Sydney! Thankfully!

However I haven't forgotten my roots nor the place where I sat discovered all my favourite records as I grew up.

So the place doesn't have much but sand, ocean and beer but it has some great people too and the cool cats from the Coast are throwing the biggest event on the beach side towns calendar Tubes 4 Googs!

What's a Googs you ask? Well a "Googs" is a Sean Macgugan of the tight Avoca community who suffered a horrific spinal injury whilst surfing in Samoa in 2003. So in support of Sean and those less fortnuate, Sean's Mates and the whole Central Coast community put together a surf for charity event on the beaches of Avoca including a kick ass benefit night to top it all off.

All proceeds from the comp and benefit go to charity and the whole weekend is killer.

So with a few extra hands involved 6 years later T4G has become a largely sponsored event which takes over 3 days of the January calendar and host some of the best local talent for one night of madness.

Who can you catch this year? Amy Meredeth, Parades, The Lazys, Goons Of Doom, Vaudeville, We Are Grace, One Jonathon and many many more all for $20 at The Woodport Inn who recently hosted Melbourne teen heart throbs British India which sold out to a packed house.

The booze is cheap, the cause is great and the bands are killer.. Why wouldn't you be there?
www.t4g.com.au for tickets!

Happy New Year kids!
